Description: External Contributors to the Validation Experiments

The VALUE validation experiments are open for participation to both VALUE and non-VALUE members. Thus, all downscaling groups interested in validating and intercomparing their methods are encouraged to participate in the different periodic calls of validation experiments. The group "external contributors" includes those non-VALUE members contributing to the validation experiments. Click here for information on how to contribute and register.

Description: Sub-daily scales

In the first phase, an inventory of downscaling methods and validation measures will be carried out. The inventory of elements which should be downscaled in subdaily scale should be done also.
The inventory of downscaling methods will encompass the range of state-of-the-art RCMs, empirical statistical downscaling methods, and MOS methods. Additionally, the inventory will search for new methods based on weather generators, stochastic models and downscaling of PDFs. The inventory will be based on a literature review and the scheme value_downscalinginventory_1.xls approved by VALUE members.

The inventory of extreme definitions will build on inventories of earlier projects (e.g. STARDEX, EMULATE), modified and extended to meet the needs of VALUE.

WG2: Data

Description: Set up the benchmark data set; gather and post- process the RCM simulations for pseudo-reality experiments.

Observational benchmark data sets and pseudo realities will be set up for the validation tasks. These will comprise climatically distinct regions, e.g., maritime, continental, alpine and Mediterranean climates. The daily station data set will build upon the ECA&D data set publicly available from the Dutch weather service KNMI. Sub-daily station data will be provided by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute SMHI for Sweden, MeteoSwiss for the Alps and the Regional Agency for Prevention and Environment ARPA of the Emilia Romagna for a Mediterranean climate.

WG1: Synthesis

Description: Coordination, stakeholder dialogue, review end user needs, guide the simulation of improved scenarios.

An assessment of end user needs and an inventory of downscaling methods and validation measures will be carried out. An initial assessment of end user needs (Maraun et al., Rev. Geophys., 2010) has identified requirements including a reliable representation of magnitudes such as extreme events, spatial and temporal variability including sub-daily variability, and consistency between different downscaled variables. WG1 will extend this assessment. Questionnaires will be sent to stakeholders and a stakeholder conference will be held.
